What are pores, exactly? Well, your face has about 20,000 of them and there are two different types: Sweat pores and oil pores (AKA hair follicles). Sweat pores are so small that they go completely unnoticed for most people. Oil pores are connected to oil glands and release oil (referred to as sebum in the skincare world) onto the skin in order to keep it moisturized and healthy. While some oil is necessary, too much can lead to issues like acne breakouts, blackheads, and yes, enlarged pores.
Naturally, men have larger oil pores than women and the summer heat isn’t about to do your pores any favors. As the temperature rises, oil production increases (no matter your skin type) which means your pores have to dilate further in order to let the increased amount oil out. Worse yet, wide-open pores means that dirt and dead skin skills can easily get trapped inside, stretching your pores even further.
So, how do you prevent your pores from expanding this summer?
First, the less-than-good news: technically you can’t shrink your pores. Pore size is a genetic trait just like eye color. That said, you can contract your pores and greatly minimize their appearance by controlling your oil production with the right set of exfoliating products and a little bit of patience.
Here's how to do it.
